Comic Book Movies

Two of my three favorite Comic Book Characters are getting their own movies, finally.

DC: Green Arrow. I’ve always been a fan of this Pseudo-Batman. Rich guy, never quite right in the head, no super powers, just skill and tools. Always seemed more ‘real’ to me than Batman.

I’m interested to see how they handle the character with the Super-Max Prison-break plot.

Marvel: Captain America. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve injured myself while playing in the woods growing-up, trying to emulate the acrobatic moves and tumbles; especially with a plywood shield strapped to my arm or back. Again, No super-powers to speak-of. Exceptionally strong, quick, and agile, but supposed to be at the limits of human and superhuman. Patriotic, duty-bound, but not blind to what’s going on around him.

I like Will Smith, he rocked-out in ‘I am Legend’ and in ‘Hancock’. I am very relieved that he won’t be playing Cap. Who would I like to see? No clue. Seriously. I can’t think of anyone who just fits. Tall, solid build, acrobatic (preferably comfortable on wires, like Jackie Chan’s Stuntmen Association) . . . Commanding presence, someone you can believe is a leader, not someone who just has a high rank. I could almost see someone like John Barrowman in the role. Tall, solid, plays a believable leader . . . don’t know about the rest of it, and he would have to not try to tag everything with a pulse.

The character I would love to see in a series of movies?

Dark Horse: Grendel. All of them. Hunter Rose, Karen, Eddie, War Child. From modern times through the distant future and all of the plot twists. Live-action would be cool, but I think CG would probably be the most practical.

Why Grendel?

Well, it is what Batman wishes he was, and what he loathes. It is more than the Man, Woman, or Child that is behind the mask. It starts with a single person, and passes to his adopted Daughter, who passes it to her boyfriend/lover. The thought/concept/ideal/spirit goes dormant for a while before germinating inside of a drug-addled lunatic who spreads It to thousands maybe millions. Terrible things are done by and worse because of It, but is It wrong? Can you say that Grendel is Good or Evil?
